Thanksgiving comes first
November 14th, 2007 at 05:35 pm by wRitErsbLock in UncategorizedFor that matter, Halloween comes first. But the point that Suldog (via Pam) made is that it is ludicrous how early marketers are shoving Christmas down our throats.
Halloween decorations had just barely appeared in stores before Christmas started to encroach. Now we’re in full-blown Christmas season. Ridiculous. I have been hearing commercials for the arrival of Santa Claus at the Mall of Millenia THIS WEEKEND! Come on! Are you kidding me? Everyone knows Santa Claus cannot arrive for pictures until he makes his grand entry in the Macy’s THANKSGIVING day parade. It’s tradition.
Yes, yes, I know I posted a picture with Santa the other day, but I flat out proclaimed it was premature. The Festival of Trees runs for ten days in November. It’s an event at which the auction off decorated trees to raise money for charity. For that reason, it makes sense to have the trees sold before December. I can understand that. I still think it’s too soon, but I can at least understand why it’s done so early.
In our house, Christmas decorations DO NOT go up until after Thanksgiving. We still have our Halloween decorations up, mostly because we’ve been super busy and haven’t had time to take them down yet. But at least pumpkins and orange lights carry over to Thanksgiving.
Christmas music does not need to begin until Thanksgiving, either. Some people love their Christmas music, but I think it’s still too early.
Suldog has suggested boycotting stores that start the Christmas decorations, advertisements, and other nonsense too early. I don’t know how feasible that is for me since every store is a culprit. Have you seen the size of the Christmas display in my grocery store? The thought of boycotting Target makes me queasy. I do, however, proclaim loudly in said stores about how stupid it is to have Christmas decorations up before Halloween. It grates on my nerves.
