on L.E.D. lighting
March 5th, 2007 at 10:32 am by wRitErsbLock in UncategorizedThe puppy blender has a post up about a supermarket in Switzerland that has switched all their lighting to L.E.D.s. Good for them, I guess. But ever since Jim installed our really cool-looking new ceiling fan with L.E.D. light on Saturday, I have to say L.E.D. provides no light whatsoever. At least our L.E.D. light provides no light. It looks cool, but we still need to buy a light-source for that room.
You can see our new ceiling fan with L.E.D. light on the Pereiracam.
UPDATE: Instalanche took down the wordpress server for a while there, up and running again for now.

Out of curiosity, how many led’s does the lamp contain?
I counted 28 in about a six inch round circle that is in the dome, you might be able to fit twice as many LEDs in the circle if you cramed them together, but I don’t think it would make much of a difference. The light it produces is less then that of just one of the nightlights we have. It looks good, but provides no usable light. It can be seen on the pereiracam at the top, but having looked at the webcam, it’s hard to tell if it is on or off.
I’ve been looking on and off at LED’s for my home, but haven’t made the leap because they tend only to have the lumens of a very low wattage bulb, at most a 30W.
At the moment, they seem best for accent lights or spot lights. I’ll probebly use some for under-cabinet lighting later, possibly for some outside accent lights, but for now, no more.
Dude, it’s in Switzerland, not Sweden.. Migros is a Swiss supermarket chain..
Hmm - I had been looking for desktop LED lamps, and those usually have about 60 LEDs. That doesn’t seem to be too bad for a desk. But I couldn’t imagine it for a ceiling lamp. And I certainly can’t see it at half that number of LEDs.
I fixed the Sweden/Switzerland mistake, but DUDE, it was just a mistake, chill out! You may know where every store in the world is, but someone else may not. One last thing, Have you looked around the place? wRitErsbLock is not a dude!
We just got some LED lights from Ikea for under-counter spot lighting. I would say that close to what they are supposed to illuminate, they’re pretty good. But if I wanted to illuminate a room with them, I would literally buy enough to line the entire perimeter (they’re strip LEDs.)
I can’t imagine lighting a room with less.
B. Durbin, we saw those lights at IKEA in Atlanta and want to get some for our kitchen. We’re just waiting for the IKEA they’re building here in Orlando to open in the fall. I anticipate most of my income going directly to IKEA!
My only experience with LED lights is their use as weapon mounted lights. One high intensity 3 or 5 watt LED can put out a lot of light (up to 100 lumens off of 9 volts), are shock resistant, and have a long service life. Incandesant xeon lamps which are also used for weapon mounted lights, are not as shock resistant, do not last as long, require more juice for the same level of light output, but they throw light further than LED’s do. As a result, xeon lamps are still preferred by some for rifle use, but for handgun lights, LED’s are the only way to go anymore.
