I think I have a job
January 15th, 2009 at 08:44 pm by wRitErsbLock in Mindless MeanderingsI start tomorrow.
…it’s complicated…
Three phone calls… very, very strange arrangements… you can totally tell I’m dealing with an attorney…
I’ll be training all weekend. You’re not going to approve of the deal I agreed to, so I won’t spell it all out for you. But tomorrow I’ll be there 11a-4p. The rest of the weekend is still up in the air. They want me up to speed on Tuesday, since Monday is a holiday.
I’m not elated. I hate the salary I agreed to. But it’s $13,144 more than I’m making on unemployment. And, within six months, the salary will rise to pretty close to what I requested on my interview the last week of December.
They’ve gone through two employees since my interview. I have either agreed to work at a truly horrible place of employment, or they suck at hiring people. Either way, when I call in my unemployment, one of the questions they ask is if I refused any offer to work. I am not refusing this offer to work.
Maybe we’ll be a perfect match for each other. Maybe this is my dream job in disguise. Maybe I’ll love it.
But for now, I have a job. I have agreed to train for free. I know, I know. I’m not happy about it either. But they’ll give it back to me as comp time down the road. My first paid day will be Tuesday. This works out perfectly since I will be able to claim the full week of unemployment.
So… there it is. A job offer that I’m not thrilled to receive or accept. In this economy, what choice do I have? I have to pay my mortgage… car… insurance…
Please think happy thoughts for me tomorrow. I feel like I have thrown myself to the lions.

I have trained for free with several jobs…..it seems to be the “new thing”. And you’re looking at it right. Money is money is money in this economy.
You have all my good thoughts and wishes…..
Congratulations! It doesn’t sound like a great situation, but then you never know what may come of it. Best of luck to you.
Speaking as an attorney, we are not all that bad!
Sending good thoughts your way.
I hope it works out better than you anticipate. But right now, I know you’ll be happy to have the income. In the meantime, I JUST found this website you might want to have a look at.
(caveat, I’ve only read about it haven’t looked at it, but the description sounds great)
It’s called jibberjobber.com and it’s a site to keep track of all the stuff you’re doing on the employment front. There is nothing at all to say you can’t be looking for another job while doing this one - so check them out.
Best of luck.
Good luck…give ‘em your best.
Oh yay! This is very good news! Yay job! Yay money!
I’m thinking GREAT thoughts. BIG GREAT THOUGHTS. I’m hoping they SUCK at hiring and that you’ll really like the job and people and training for free means you’ll learn skills you can use elsewhere, should you so choose.
WOOHOOO! Good luck, ok?
something is something, my friend. you’ll do great, and they’ll love you, and everything will be just fine. *hugs*
Oh, good luck! I hope this works out for you.
Congrats girl!
Like others have said, money is money - at least for now. There’s nothing that says you can’t keep your eyes open for other things if this one doesn’t work out.
Hopefully it will turn out to be much better than you are anticipating!
It will suck, or not. But at least you will know. I hope you love it.
I’ve trained for “half price” before… which was almost free since it was a minimum wage job!
