We drove way far away to our favorite nursery today “just to look.” Considering we were just looking, we sure spent a lot! We came home with a bag of much-needed fertilizer for our three blueberry bushes, and… two more bushes. Both guava. Two different types of guava.
We planted the strawberry guava a few feet away from the strawberry guava we bought two years ago. We’re hoping that having a buddy will inspire it to fruit. We appreciate the pretty flowers, but we’d really appreciate some delicious fruit.
We planted the other guava in our front yard, in the planter area located between the walkway, the front porch, the driveway, and the garage. It’s most likely visible on the camera. We’ve had this breed of guava before, and it produced sixteen amazing-smelling fruit in 2006, and then died a horrible death when we moved it from one location to another. It was a bad call. Of those sixteen fruit, we got to eat one. One guava. Some creatures ate the other fifteen. We’re hoping that by having the new plant located in the front planter that we can keep critters away from the delicious fruit. We have more wildlife in our backyard than in the front yard. And while the critters will find their way to the front, we’re hoping they’re a little put off by all the cement and tile they’ll need to cross to reach our fruit.
If you need a refresher course on the edible things we have in our yard, here’s a list from 2006. We don’t have the papaya tree anymore, but almost bought a replacement tree today. We love having edible plants!
I need to work on digging up the palm tree roots from the front so we can plant the sapote tree. Also, I need to get a larger pot for my loquat. I grew that from seeds and am shocked at how well it’s doing. Also amazing: how many pomegranate plants I have that I grew from seeds. Who knew I’d have green thumbs?
This week, I must get my garden ready and start planting seeds if I plan to eat peppers, tomatoes, and zucchini, which I do.

I planted seeds last weekend… Peas, scallions, and carrots in little starter trays. The rest will have to wait until our weather gets a little less schizophrenic. Tomorrow is all about raking out gravel from the driveway to prep for the paver stones.
I love spending $ on the house and working in the yard better than any other retail therapy. It’s money better spent, as I have something to show for it!
[...] WB’s update on her garden yesterday reminded me about the garden I’ve been meaning to create for over a year now. I’ve been wanting to set up a small area where we can grow our own fruits and vegetables. Since our space is limited, we can’t attempt to grow Blackberry plants, though I’ve wanted some ever since visiting my parents’ friend’s house many, many years ago and eating berries straight from their tree. We’ll start off with something small, like tomatoes, and see how that goes. Part of me really wants to get on with it, but whenever I think about the creepy-crawlies living in the dirt, and the possibilities of coming across a frog while pulling out weeds, I quickly change my mind. Maybe I can get hubby to do it and I just watch… [...]
