A story from my weekend about my maternal unit
August 29th, 2006 at 08:53 pm by wRitErsbLock in Mindless Meanderings, As the stomach turnsWe stayed the night Thursday and Friday at my mother’s house. During the time we spent with my mother, she made several inquiries about my niece, Rebecca. She made absolutely no inquiries about my step-daughter, RTY.
On Saturday, we six (mom, Jason, Geta, Ethan, me, Jim) were eating at the food court of some mall when my mother made yet another inquiry about my niece. I snapped.
me: Why don’t you ever ask me questions about my step-daughter yet you always ask me about my niece? Is it too hard for you to remember her name?
mom: Oh, no, it’s just we were talking about X with the baby [Ethan], and it reminded me that Rebecca is a baby and… yadda yadda yadda
You know, I don’t really want my mother taking an interest in my step-daughter’s life, because my mother can be an evil, mean-spirited person, but if she’s going to go out of her way to ask about my niece and take an interest in her life, she sure as hell better think it through and ask about my daughter.
It’s just polite.
For the remainder of the weekend, she made a very obvious and unnatural effort to ask questions about RTY.
