hiking Split Oak park
January 13th, 2008 at 02:28 pm by wRitErsbLock in UncategorizedThose of you who read my husband’s blog know that he recently acquired a new toy. He wanted to try it out this morning, so we got up and went hiking. Originally, we thought we’d head out to Wekiva, but found we were disinclined to go that far. Instead, we went to our old standby (no admission cost) Split Oak Park. Split Oak connects with Moss Park, which charges admission. It’s never, ever crowded, and is usually a nice place to hike. Here’s what it looked like from where I was standing.
I have never found Florida to be a pretty state. No matter which direction you face, you see something like this:

It’s just so plain. But this picture illustrates why it is so important to stay on the trail:

Can you see it? Here, let me get closer:

Banana spiders creep me out. They are beautiful, though. This particular spider had an enormous web. I saw the web long before I saw the spider. I have a knack for spotting webs and spiders. For some perspective, this guy’s body is almost three inches long. I’ve heard they have a vicious bite; I hope to never find out for myself!
Some other, less creepy sites I saw:

There were huge areas of puffs of lichen. This is one of the puffs.

Sometimes there are pretty sites, but usually I think looking off into the distance is ugly.

Important safety tip: watch where you kneel to take pictures!

That’s all I’m posting. Check over to sherlock’s site this week as I hope he will post the pictures he took with his fabulous new camera.
