Uh Oh. Gardasil is in the news and the news is negative for a change.

Gardasil has been the subject of 7,802 “adverse event” reports from the time the Food and Drug Administration approved its use two years ago, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Girls and women have blamed the vaccine for causing ailments from nausea to paralysis — even death. Fifteen deaths were reported to the FDA, and 10 were confirmed, but the CDC says none of the 10 were linked to the vaccine. The CDC says it continues to study the reports of illness.

(emphasis my own) While ten confirmed deaths out of twenty-six million doses may seem statistically insignificant to researchers, I think that’s a ridiculously high number. O-N-E-L-E-S-S my ass. Trading the risk of possibly acquiring one of four CURABLE types of HPV for paralysis or death? I’ll take my chances with HPV, thankyouverymuch.

The vaccine’s manufacturer, Merck & Co. Inc., says it has distributed more than 26 million Gardasil vaccines worldwide, including nearly 16 million in the United States. It estimates that 8 million girls and women have received the vaccine in the United States since June 2006.

Holy crap! We are poisoning our young women at an alarming rate because the drug’s makers and marketers are not giving the full story to its victims.

Jesalee’s lawyer, Michael McLaren, said she got the shot on February 27, 2007 and soon developed a fever and felt pain. The next day, he said, Jesalee felt pain in her chest and abdomen.

Her mother, Laura Parsons, said Jesalee spent weeks in the hospital and underwent two surgeries after developing pancreatitis. She says the federal government should have studied the drug more before approving its use.

“I just feel let down by the government,” Parsons said.

I feel very sorry for that fourteen-year old girl, but for her mother to accuse the government of letting her down when she likely did nothing to research the poison prior to offering her daughter up as a guinea pig is asinine. A quick google search for Gardasil risks or Gardasil side effects brings my blog up pretty close to the top, and several far more reputable sites up higher than mine.

Merck, of course, says the healthy girls’ sudden serious unhealthy situations are coincidence and have nothing at all to do with their poison, Gardasil.

I get so angry every time I hear or see a commercial urging parents to poison their daughters with Gardasil. It’s too early to know all the possible long-term negative (and positive, for that matter) effects of this drug. It’s about time the media starts reporting the negative.

(I’ve ranted about this before.)

  1. Mrs. Who Said,

As you know, I share your anger…a drug that tells girls it’s okay to sleep around…

I will not give my daughter this shot (she’s 13), AND she and I have discussed the ramifications completely.

I always say to their ‘one less’ slogan: One less ‘good’ girl, one more slut.

Excellent post! I’ve not trusted this vaccine since its inception for all the reasons stated above. It’s horrible, how the schools tried to strong arm all girls into having it.

  3. Crispy Said,

There are two issues here. First, is the FDA in the back pocket of the Drug manufacturers? Yes…and you can thank Congressional Republicans and George Bush for appointing big PhRMA people to positions in the FDA and gutting the approval process through legislation passed since 1995.

Second, the “drug tells girls its OK to sleep around”? Seriously…how many girls think that I may get cervical cancer and so I shouldnt sleep around. Pregnancy? Yes. VD? Yes. Cervical cancer? Is it really possible that you are really willing to expose your daughter to cervical cancer to prove a political point?

No wonder this country is going down the crapper.

    Crispy,
Gardasil only protects against 4 strains of HPV that may possibly lead to cervical cancer. It does not protect against cervical cancer. HPV is not cancer. It is a curable STD. I will absolutely rather have my daughter possibly at risk for getting one of the four HPV strands than risk having my healthy child suddenly take sick as a side effect of an unnecessary drug.

If Gardasil prevented Cancer, it might be worth the risk. But for now, the drug is still far too new and scary to offer up my child as a guinea pig. You go right ahead, however, and poison yourself and your daughter.

Politics have nothing to do with poisoning myself or my daughter.

  5. lukie Said,

Even if Gardasil protected against all cervical cancer I would have to pass, considering the side effects.

Why put your child in danger for a “what if”. HPV is a STD. I think I would rather educate her on how to prevent that, than give her a drug that could put her life at risk.

It is all about educating our children.

  6. Archerychic Said,

Thank you for putting this out there. My best friend was one of the many girls that was injured by the vaccine. She took two of the three shots beginning in late summer last year. She encouraged me to get vaccinated because as her Dr. had told her HPV could be contracted by casual contact. I began to research it and came across your blog and several news articles on the dangers of the vaccine. Not long after she had the second shot, she began having several symptoms that were reported by other girls as adverse reactions to the vaccine including Gullian Barre Syndrome. She was scheduled to have the third shot, the shot that at least one of her dr.s thinks may have killed her, the week after I found your site and several others. That was in October. From September until early spring this year, she has gone through tests and prodding and doctors thinking she is crazy . Finally, she has found doctors who have heard of the harm Gardasil is doing. They project it will take six months to two years for her be normal again. I want to become violent every time I hear those commercials. I have been one less for nearly a year. One less best friend that is.

HPV IS NOT A CURABLE STI. YOU CANNOT GET A PILL OR SHOT FOR IT. STI, SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS OR STDS SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES ARE CALLED DISEASES FOR A REASON. YOU CANNOT TREAT IT WITH A DRUG AND POOF YOU ARE ALL BETTER.

First of all, There are over 30 of types of genital HPV, but only so many are the best know! If you get a pap test you can find out if you have HPV, but only with females, not males. There are certain types of HPV which may go away on their own and there are some which do not that lead to warts and cancer and that is what the vaccine protects against. … AHEM YOU DO NOT WANT TO GET THE FOUR TYPES IT PROTECTS AGAINST. Gardasil is the only cervical cancer vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV: 2 types that cause 70% of cervical cancer cases, and 2 other types that cause 90% of genital warts cases. Types 16, 18, 6, 11.

I got the vaccine on my own decison being an adult and aware of possible side effects and have had no problems a year later and I am thankful for that. I think it is always best to consider your options and talk to your doctor. Think of all the vaccines they have come up with to save lives. Sadly with or without shots people still die. Look at the flu shot. Some people die when they get it, some people die when they don’t. Sometimes you just don’t know. You just have to do what you think is right and sometimes it goes wrong., but that is life. I still suggest safe sex practices to any teen than to suggest a shot to help prevent anything. The shot came out in my early twenties and I am in a commited relationship, I decided it was the best thing for me and I do not regret my decison. I am glad my mother supported my decision, but I know she would have felt terrible if something had happened to me. I am terribly saddened that this shot has effected people negatively, but I am one of the people who it has not hurt and I am grateful.

  8. P Said,

I changed my name, I am not related to the other Pam. Although I do agree you shouldn’t force girls to get shots instead of teaching them and educating which schools should do. And I do not think Gardasil encourages females to sleep around in any way, shape, or form. Having a vaccine doesn’t make you a “slut”. Growing up I had birth control in my late teen while many of my friends did not take it and slept around. It is not a one size fits all kind of world. I am not “poisoned” either.

  10. Mrs. Who Said,

Crispy: Don’t know much about you and your situation, but I can tell you that my daughter knows there are more risks than just STDs and pregnancy in sex. We’ve also talked about the emotional impact that teens and many young adults are not mature enough to handle. And I’ve emphasized also that if you’re NOT having sex, then you don’t have to worry about ANY of those.

FWIW, my daughter knows what preventative measures to take, including the shot and birth control if sex is in the offing. However, she also understands she won’t be at risk if she’s not doing anything. Casual sex puts you at risk for diseases, pregnancy, and emotional trauma. If folks would put more value on self-worth in sexuality, girls wouldn’t be facing a Gardasil problem.

And regarding your comment: Seriously…how many girls think that I may get cervical cancer and so I shouldnt sleep around.

Thank you for making exactly my point…if they can’t see that, they don’t need to be having sex. They aren’t mature enough yet. So why push an immunization on them that makes them think they’re ready?

I got the shot for my daughter and she has been in pain ever since! She was hospitalized for 4 days with pancreatitis, after being released, she has been in and out of ERs with extreme abdominal pain. The worst part is that no one wants to “say” that this is related to the shots.

As a parent I was thinking I was doing the right thing for my child, thinking why wait till you are at risk for any cancer if you can prevent it first. Now, I have an 11 yr. old on many different medications and at least once a week we go to the ER because the pain is so severe that Tylenol with codine doesn’t cut it. After a few doses of Morphine, she can at least get some rest. She missed almost a month of school out of the last three. She is now not allowed to have sugar, fatty foods, and carbonated drinks. She can’t go to friend’s houses to spend the night because we don’t know when the pain will start. We can’t go far from home because if she need to go to the hospital, we have to go where they know what her history is. That means no vacations, we had to miss her cousin’s graduation because it was to far away. Well, I’m so glad that she has a slightly decreased chance of getting cervical cancer! It sure is worth it! Please, if you are thinking about getting the shot for you or your child please think twice!!!!!!

  13. Jdogg Said,

Oh, and by the way, the problems I and most people are having with the shot are not the side affects that you know about, it’s the ones we didn’t. I knew about the reported side affects and the risks, it was the ones like she is going through now. NO WHERE in any of the Merk’s info. did it mention any of the girls that have had problems for a few years after the shot. If you go to CNN. com, there is a story about a girl going through the same thing as my daughter. That’s what drew my attention to the problems with the shot.

  14. Jdogg Said,

Just an update, they have finally found something, but they can’t explain it. They found a “ring” of unexplained white blood cell around the end of her small intestine. THey said that this is common in someone with ulcers and khron’s disease. The problem is that after the endoscopy and many blood tests over the last three months there is no signs of anything like that. So, the search continues with some results but nothing promising for right now. BTW, another great place to check out the problems with this shot is www.medalerts.com, there you will find the more then 8,000 adverse side effects of the shot that have been reported. Please if you are experiencing anything that you feel are connected to this shot, report it asap. Well, thank you all for your time and ears ( or eyes), it helps .

  15. Jdogg Said,

sorry the website is www.medalerts.org not com.
