new computer for me!
August 21st, 2008 at 04:23 pm by wRitErsbLock in Mindless MeanderingsJust before lunch, I inexplicably downloaded a super nasty virus onto my computer. I spent my lunch hour pulling my hair out and using someone else’s computer to research how to remove super nasty virus that had completely crippled my computer.
Around 130, my favorite IT person, hubby’s best friend, mercifully came by my office to check on me. He left just before 3p, problem solved, he said.
Five minutes after he left, I sat down at my computer and watched in wonder as the screen alternated between the start up screen and very wordy blue screens of death.
I called my favorite IT person who told me how to do a system re-install. He said it was idiot proof and I shouldn’t have any trouble doing it.
I called him moments later and told him the computer was not responding. He pronounced it dead/dying and congratulated me on getting a new computer. He also said it was purely coincidental that the computer would go belly up the same day I acquired a super nasty virus.
So, here I sit, on the brand new, previously unclaimed computer installing programs.
I hate technology, but at least I have a brand new computer, right?

I’m kidding, I’m kidding! I had to do the same thing myself recently, and all of a sudden, my PC was ten times faster. People tell me that I should go down the dual boot Windows/Linux route, and only use Windows for when I’m playing games such as Morrowind or X3:Reunion rather than browsing the internet.
I tried that, and I’d probably be really happy with it I could actually work out how to access the internet after I choose to boot to Linux rather than Windows.
Geekdom is an all or nothing thing. You can’t be a mere semi-geek like me and expect anything other than total disaster when you over-reach the limits of your geekiness. It’s a wonder that I managed to get the damn thing working again in the first place.
It keeps asking me if I want to download ‘ActiveX Controls’ and I always click on ‘Yes’ , even though I have no idea what they actually are.
It was probably always clicking the ‘Yes’ box that got me into trouble in the first place…
