While I was moving my car, I heard a bit of the news on the radio. They said in Punta Gorda hundreds of people are missing from a mobile home park, and they're stacking up bodies. That's just horrible.
Well, I want to talk my husband into taking the Jeep around the neighborhood (which now qualifies as off-roading!).
240p - God Bless Panera and their non-password-protected wireless network! We're at our favorite plaza, Waterford, we came in the hopes of finding that they have power and, more importantly, wireless internet. We rushed in through heavy rain, ignored the large line for food, and found an empty chair. I unplugged a lamp, plugged in my computer, posted what I already blogged, and am now getting my "fix". God it's good to be (1) IN AIR CONDITIONING!!! (2) ONLINE!!!
A neighbor (with a tree in his roof) told us he heard we're not likely to have power restored for 4-5 days. FOUR OR FIVE DAYS WITHOUT INTERNET AND AIR CONDITIONING!!! I'll say it again, man was not meant to live in Florida without air conditioning. I've been so irritable to poor Jim because I'm hot and, after our nice cold shower, I was immediately sweaty and gross and not wanting to put on clothes. We'll likely find somewhere else to sleep tonight - it's just to freakin hot to be at the house. Meanwhile, all we've eaten today is melted ice cream.
As an added bonus, while my cell phone worked just fine during the hurricane (I called my brother so he could hear the freight train sound outside), we have no cellular service today. Which is inconvenient. But not as inconvenient as the complete lack of internet and air conditioning (I'm detecting a theme here).
I have a whole lot of pictures. Let me see what programs I have on this computer that maybe I can throw a quick slideshow together for you.
From the WTF category: the neighbor on the corner (with the tree) has a generator. They have their refrigerator and freezer hooked up to it instead of their computers and wireless network. What's that all about? Honestly, some people have their priorities all out of whack.
340p - Okay, kids, the slideshow is almost up and running. These are just the pictures taken after the last download, and the rest of the pictures were downloaded onto Jim's computer, before the power went out.
We drove around a little this morning. The intersection of Semoran/436 and Pershing, most of the traffic lights were missing, and I took a picture of the broken street sign that formerly identified Semoran/436. While I was at the intersection, I also took a picture of a bull dozer moving debris from the road. The intersection before that (on Pershing and Wildhorse), the lights were hanging low. I took a picture. On Curry Ford, I took a picture of the pile of traffic lights in the median. We've seen a lot of destruction. Others did not fare as well as we did. There would have been more pictures from this morning, but the battery on my camera died. I just wanted to throw this batch of pictures up quickly for my faithfuls to see what we're seeing.
One of the most frustrating things for me and Jim is that we have no knowledge of what's going on. Without television and radio to listen to, we're missing out on watching what other people are dealing with. And it just plain sucks. And Barnes and Noble was sold out of newspapers, so we're just clueless about what's going on with the remnants of Charlie, how bad Orlando / Central Florida was hit, and everything that would be useful to know. So, my faithful readers likely know much more about what I'm living than I do!!! Well, I've hogged the internet for almost an hour, it's time to let Jim get his fix. Clearly he needs to get a laptop.
Oh, and Duane and Margaret are also okay. They are trying to find a hotel room to get out of the heat in their apartment.
451p - Since I haven't already said so, Happy Friday the 13th. JG started freaking out and had us all out of the office at 1039a. Jim didn't get out until 1. I hit the stores (Publix and the pet store so the kids could eat too). Insanity. There was a line of vehicles waiting to get into the (boycott) Wal-mart parking lot (the plaza that has my grocery and pet stores). I took a picture. I also took a picture of the line of cars waiting to get gas at 7-Eleven. I've never seen a line of cars there before. I tried to get gas at the BP, but they were sold out. So, I didn't get gas. I figure we'll be fine: I still have 70 miles on this tank, and the Jeep has a full tank. So we'll be fine. When Jim and I got home with the masking tape, we quickly cleaned the back yard (ie properly stored items that could become airborn), and closed the shed just as the first band of severe storm hit. In between the first and second bands, I took pictures of the house - the "before" shots. As it stands right now, Charley just came ashore at Ft. Meyers, and is a category 4 (winds 140+ sustained) hurricane. Very soon, Charley will cross over Orlando. I'm listening to a press conference with the Orange county sheriff and emergency people, and they're saying "Orlando is the center of the bulls eye". Very exciting. By the time Charley hits us, he should weaken down to a level 3, which is still very serious. We have our windows taped up, and the cars are parked in creative manners. In times like these, I regret the lack of garage.
Update on my uncle, he had his heart shock procedure around 1040a. They were only going to shock his heart twice, but they ended up shocking him 4 times, and it didn't work. J'Lynn says she thinks my uncle is scared. So much so that he has vowed to quit smoking. They're going to keep him hospitalized probably until Monday. And poor Rhena, they live in a mobile home, and all mobile homes have mandatory evacuations across central Florida, and her husband is in the hospital. I feel badly for her. And I'm scared for my uncle.
On the bright side, this hurricane tastes yummy. The second one is much tastier than the first, as tasty beverages often are.
The rain is picking up again so let me post this - just in case. I'll blog throughout. The storm is now predicted to directly hit us closer to 11p, compared with the 2a they were talking a few hours ago. Fun stuff.
Hurricane Charley: breaking up the monotony of life.
BEFORE:
539p - The worse thing about DirectTV is that when it clouds up, we lose our television. Dammitalltohell. And they were finally talking about more interesting-to-me stuff regarding Charley. Grrrrrr. It's raining steadily again. I'll likely go sit on the back porch and enjoy the rain. I love watching the rain. Although the thunder is quite ominous. Time for a third tasty beverage?
601p - The neighbor's waterfall off their roof:
Welcome Farkers! Since I posted a link in a comment thread, my hit counter has gone nuts.
Once again, the storm has calmed. Still awaiting the wrath of Charley. The television keeps coming and going. We hooked the cable modem into the UPS so that we don't lose our internet, in case we lose power. There is no life off line! Wow! Charley is booking across the state. That's probably a good thing: the faster he moves, the less flooding we'll endure.
This is really quite exciting for me; my first real hurricane. We were all set for Floyd back in 99, and then he turned at the last minute. So this is a new experience for me. Back when Floyd was threatening, my dad ordered me to get onto a plane and get out of the state. Funny how Charley essentially snuck up on us. This morning, Orlando was in the far right of their projected margin or error for Charley's path. Now we're the bulls eye. Ma is a bit nervous, I think. Not sure which station she's watching in her room, but she came out a few minutes ago all concerned that we don't have a "safe" room to enter in the event of a tornado.
The rain has stopped... again... for now...
614p - They've reported 5 deaths so far. The one they've focussed on was a traffic incident in which a semi truck toppled onto a passenger vehicle, killing a small child. You always hate to hear when an innocent child dies. One of those freak events. Like that poor woman jogger last year who had a tree land on her and kill her. It's a smack from God, I guess.
HOLY SH*T!!! They just showed video in Ft. Myers of the roof being lifted off the Ft. Myers post office! WOW! That's was impressive!
And (sing it with me) here comes the rain again.
710p - From the WTF category: Why are the news personalities interviewing tourists at Daytona Beach? I could care less what people over in Daytona think right about now. Ooooh - you're on the beach - on the other side of the state. Now, interview some stupid schmuck over on the west coast beach and I'll be more interested. It's really calm outside - quite disconcerting. And furthermore... WhyTF do these stupid news stations insist on running all those stupid ass banners across the bottom half of the screen when they're showing the really interesting video? That irritates the hell out of me. I'll tell you, I don't envy idiot news people standing out reporting in weather like this. Insanity, I tell you.
733p - It's getting really windy. I took pictures of trees in the wind, but I'm not sure the pictures quite convey the reality. Winds are only at 24mph right now (at the airport, five miles away from here)... and increasing in velocity. It's really cold outside (which is to say cold for Florida, which isn't really cold compared to when I lived up north). Here he comes... are you excited? There have been reports of tornados around town.
743p - LOL! The more the news people tell us to stay inside, the more often I go outside (covered back patio) to see the weather up close! How else am I supposed to adequately report on the weather to you, my faithful readers? The thing that creeps me out is the ceiling tile that covers the attic entry is opening and closing with the draft created from having the patio door open. The wind makes that creepy whistling sound. Happy Friday the 13th, eh? I'm still really excited about this storm (because we all know I'm a dumbass). They keep showing roadways from the DOT cameras, and the cameras are just shaking in the wind. I'm so impressed with this little storm.
Unrelated: I'm so excited! A fellow farker commented in my general direction on the hurricane thread (on which I posted a comment linking to my blog and Jim's blog). Yay! I'm really part of the fark community! I'm so easily amused.
750p - Behold the first power surge. Now I have to get off the couch to turn the tv back on. Behold the second power surge. Maybe I'll just wait to turn the tv back on.
806p - Power surge. The trees are bending over. Our neighbors (the ones I like, not the crazy ones who light fireworks after dousing them in gasoline) parked 2 trucks under the large tree in their front yard. That seemed foolish to me when I watched them park them there (as we parked mine between the 2 houses, Ma's across the front, and Jim's protecting the sliding glass door), and now that I'm watching that tree bending over, I am even more convinced that parking their trucks underneath was a bad call. It's really cold (for Florida) outside. I'm contemplating a sweater (because as a Floridian, I relish any opportunity to wear winter clothing). It's finally dark out. Ma is coping well, but she's clearly antsy. The only thing I'm antsy about is losing my ability to be online. Fortunately, my iBook has a battery backup (poor Jim not having his iBook yet), but if we lose power, and it lasts a while, the UPS won't sustain the internet connection long enough to satiate my needs.
WOW! Video in Charlotte County of the wind literally blowing a large pick up truck and a small airplane around! Impressive. I wonder where Charlotte County is?
Wait, let me go park my car underneath a large tree so I can get my Element!
815p - That power surge was longer than the previous 3. We may be nearing the end of my site updates. Sigh. That is indeed a sad thing.
824p - Okay kids, I just had my first moment of fright. I heard something in the backyard smack into something else, and when I got up, the rain was blowing into the house (our covered patio is really quite large, so to have rain coming in is impressive). I'm feeling a little discontent. The wind is raging. At the airport, they say the sustained winds are at 30mph, with gusts higher than that. The airport is just down the road. So that's what's going on at my house. I'm a little worried. Wow. I wish you could hear what we're hearing. Ominous just is not an adequate word to describe it anymore. And to think Charley has weakened considerably. I can't imagine being in a storm like this over on the coast when it first hits. It's only category 2 right now. And it's scary.
836p - And the power is out. And apparently staying out. Wait, it's back on. Make up your mind. It keeps trying to come back on, and I am off line. But I will continue to blog anyway. It's much scarier in the dark.
1124p - What a strange ride. Jim and I stood on the front stoop for the entire storm, so, from 836 until about 1015 we stood outside and got cold and wet. It was great. We got lucky, upon current first inspection, we sustained some roof damage, but nothing compared with what various houses in the neighborhood sustained. Yes, we took a walk around the neighborhood to assess damage. During the storm, we watched various object as they were thrust down the street. I pity the people in the house perpendicular to our street; they must have taken a beating. We watched the huge tree on the corner (2 houses down) break and land on their truck. It missed the Jeep (we root for vehicles similar to ours). We heard the power station blow shortly after my 836 blog (which I didn't get to post yet). The lightening was green and blue - absolutely beautiful. And there was a whistling for a solid hour as the wind whipped about the area. We caught a garbage can. And we went into the back yard (the wind was pounding the back, so we were somewhat sheltered in the front) at the right time and salvaged the aluminum facing that had been ripped off one section of the overhang. So we'll be able to fix that without buying new materials. Our roof really doesn't look too bad (in the dark). After the storm, neighbors poured into the streets, it was like a big block party. We spoke to more neighbors tonight than we have in all the time we have lived here (probably including Jim's entire childhood). After investigating the tree on the corner, we went up the street and were greatly impressed by a house across the street, maybe 3 houses up. They have a tree in their front yard that blew completely over, with the roots and grass ripped up. I took pictures. We were very impressed... until we saw an even larger tree on another street in a similar situation. Those people got lucky because the tree didn't fall completely over - it would have gone straight through the middle of their house. That's the house with the convertible cream colored Bug. Very exciting stuff. Neighbors are currently driving around the neighborhood. I'd like to break out the Jeep and take a tour, but I don't know how smart it is to do that. We want to get up at first light and get some good pictures before clean up commences.
It was really scary at times. Mostly because without power, it was very, very dark. And we'd hear things hitting and not have any idea what was hitting what. And the scariest thing was when things would hit our feet and legs (because we were dumbasses who opted to stand outside the entire time, much to Ma's displeasure) and we'd shine the Maglite down to see what hit us. And the rain was so forceful. I took a drop to the eye, it was like having a nail driven through my contact. Not the most pleasant feeling in the world. It was cold, too. Jim wore a sweatshirt and I got my jacket out. Then the storm wasn't so bad because we were warmer. At one point, three dogs ran by, and, even though I loathe dogs, my heart ached for them and I tried to coax them into the house. Thankfully, they didn't come in. But I was so worried about them.
Several neighbors lost large sections of fencing. Ours is damaged, but, technically, that section is owned by our neighbor. The two sections we own are fine. My car looks like it has been through a hurricane. It's covered in bits of leaves and dirt. My car was exposed to more of the wind's force than Jim's Jeep and Ma's Civic. So it's much dirtier. But it didn't look like any of the cars sustained any damage, and for that, we're relieved. I feel badly for the neighbors on the corner who had their tree fall onto their vehicles.
Someone lost one of their spinning vent thingies (technical term) from their roof. It was in our neighbor's yard. That neighbor - the one who cleverly parked their vehicles underneath their tree - also had tree branches fall onto their vehicles. I'm really just so pleased with the way we parked so that our vehicles were quite safe.
Since we're lacking in power, we're headed to bed. We're exhausted. Hopefully we'll have power in the morning and I'll be able to post my blog and some pictures. We're going to put the camera battery to charge so that if the power comes back on, we're back in business. I hope others fared as well as we did.
Thank you faithful reader. The quest for the limelight never ends, does it?
106p - How exciting! It must be a good storm! Ma bought groceries (and water, batteries) in preparation. If I ever get a lunch break, I'll go to Eckerd to get Coke (2 for $4.88) and masking tape for the windows. I'd like to put the birds outside for the storm, but I don't think Ma would appreciate that. I'm very excited! Here's hoping JG succumbs to "peer pressure" and cancels work tomorrow.
122p - Is it more ominous to have a hurricane scheduled to hit on Friday the Thirteenth?
1034p - So Uncle had his TEE this afternoon. The good news is they didn't find any clots or balls of blood, or whatever he called them. But they're keeping him until maybe Saturday now. Maybe they're just being overly cautious because of Hurricane Charley out there, they may not want to release a heart patient into a hurricane. Tomorrow, they're going to do a procedure in which they're going to shock his heart in the hope of getting both chambers to sync back up. Uncle says that it's not a big deal, but I think having your heart shocked is a pretty scary thing. It scares the hell out of me, actually. And if it were no big deal, then why are they keeping him in the hospital, and not even letting him out of bed for very long? That sounds like a big deal to me, and something worth worrying about. I'm scared for my Uncle. Depending on what happens with the hurricane, I'll try to see my Uncle again tomorrow night.
JG left a little while ago. Ma signed all the papers and we're going to list the house on Monday (giving us one final weekend to finish things up).
Expect nothing rational or coherent.
I'm just going to have to accept that fact that Margarita is going to spend an hour every morning hanging out at Patricia's house after she picks up Rebecca. Sure, she and Jim will both tell me that she's doing to it be with Rachel (because Margarita continues to drive Rachel to school, and now that she's up super early to retrieve Rebecca, she stops off at Patricia's house for an hour before taking Rachel to school), but Jim's wife views it as Margarita (yet again) is going out of her way to spend time with (bow down and worship almighty) Patricia. I know I'll never be as good as Patricia:
And god forbid king of apathy stand up for his feelings or the feelings of his wife, because, afterall, worshipping Patricia is justified so long as you do it with Rachel's best interest in mind. Ah, if only the other's Rachel's feelings were ever considered.
Personally, I wouldn't want to subject myself or my child to the EVIL that is almighty Patricia.
I loathe that bitch.
But on the bright side, the dishwasher is mostly installed.
You know, it's times like these, and oh how frequent they are, that I question things. Today's question is do I really want to encourage Margarita to sell her house, thereby guaranteeing that we live with her until the end of time, thereby guaranteeing that I have wonderful cousin Patricia's greatness rubbed in my face 24/7?
I've discussed my anger with a person who is also married with step children. At first this person told me I was unreasonable, but then, when I told her my mother-in-law talks to my husband's ex-wife more than she talks to either me or Jim, this person admitted that would piss her off as well.
But, those I live with will tell me I'm too sensitive or over-reacting or not keeping sight that this is all for Rachel's well-being. If events were planned for Rachel's best interest, Jim should have sued for custody when jailbird, unemployed evil dictator would have been viewed (legally) as the less desireable parent.
When does my perspective get grouped in with the "Rachel's best interest" category?
I feel sorry for Margarita: she lets Patricia walk all over her. And her only friend is Patricia's mother. And she has me for a rotten daughter-in-law.
This rant brought to you by the "There's a reason my family is so spread out from each other" category.
1138a - Update on my uncle. jonna spoke with him and what they've found is that the lower chambers of his heart are working fine, but the upper chambers are working slow. this is causing the irregular heart rate and the lower chambers speed up at times to compensate. he could've lived with it for some time and not even known it, but it would most likely have led to a stroke so it was fortunate that they happened to catch it. for now, he's fine and they caught it good and early.
I spoke with him a few minutes ago and he said that he saw a specialist and he's decided that instead of taking the less-aggressive medicine route, he'll undergo some sort of procedure tomorrow involving a tube down his throat to try to repair his heart. He thinks he may be released on Friday. He was in good spirit, and I suspect he's enjoying (1) the break and (2) the attention. I'm going to go visit him tonight. Please continue to think happy thoughts in his general direction.
620p - Wow! Bonnie and Charley are stirring things up. Soon-to-be-hurricane Bonnie will miss us, but we'll feel wind from her edge. Hurricane Charley, on the other hand, is on a direct collision course with Central Florida. Can you say hurricane party?
1048p - I've been meaning to blog about this but have been too tired. David Mackey (gentleman in my choir) entered a plea of no contest in his murder for hire drama. His sentencing is August 20th. I'm sad for him. He's a nice guy. I guess he won't be at choir in a few weeks.
Checking the news... By some fluke, a jury ruled in favor of being responsible for ones own actions. A girl who trespassed while skipping school and ended up falling through the ceiling 50 feet to the floor, shattering her leg, was not awarded her $900K lawsuit. Hallelujah! Finally, a frivolous lawsuit is recognized for what it really is.
Jonna and I went to see her dad/my uncle tonight. He seems in good spirits, if frustrated at being trapped in the hospital. I'm glad we went to see him.
I watched video of a beheading. I'm still processing how that made me feel.
Do you think if the bobblehead were beheaded that his head would fizzle off into the air like a deflating balloon?
643p - Okay, so here's what happened. Uncle was at the doctor's office because of a cold, and the doctor decided to run an EKG which revealed an irregular heartbeat, coupled with irregular breathing. Doctor then called an ambulance and my Uncle was taken to the emergency room. He is being admitted but says he is fine. The doctors caught the prelude to a probable stroke and want to keep him overnight for observation. He'll likely be medicated henceforth to help prevent a stroke. I'm waiting to hear back from either Uncle or Rhena to find out if we can go visit him tonight at the hospital. They're currently waiting for test results.
Meanwhile, dad told me that stroke runs in the Lukawitz family. Grandma Lukawitz (dad's mom) had 2 strokes, and dad's grandma died of a stroke. I was not previously aware of the family history of stroke.
On to a non-health-related topic: at lunch today, Ma, Jim, Rebecca, and I went to Home Depot (Hiawassee & 50) and bought a dishwasher, for which Jim is now investigating the installation process. It felt good to be able to check that task off the list of things to do before the house can be listed (on Thursday night).
I had a bad dream last night in which my mother died quite unexpectedly. So when J'Lynn im-ed me about my Uncle, I got really scared. Despite how infrequently we see Richie and Rhena, I think of them both very fondly. I hope everything really is okay.
We're all covered with tiny black paw prints. And these two (who followed me into the house, by the way, after I left them outside for momma cat to steal them back) are having fun playing with all us (who are more than happy to forgo work to play with fuzz balls).
128p - I just love when I prove my stupidity. Today, Tony was going by the house to take Ma to buy the dishwaser, because he has a pickup, and she has a Home Depot card. And as an added bonus, we have a 10% off coupon for Home Depot. So Tony called to ask where to find the coupon, and the damn thing is here with me, in my purse. I'm so stupid. And if he had only called earlier, I could have met them at the store during my lunch break.
Instead, I went to SA and visited with Pamela a bit. She's agreed to stand in line with me for my Idol audition. She's insane too. I've narrowed it down to 2 songs, and I'll be prepared to do both, just in case I need a second song for some reason. I haven't decided which is my first choice, but there's still time. The two songs are Blues in the Night and All of Me. They're both great songs, and are fun.
1104p - So tired. The formerly black wall has received it's first coat of white paint. I'm hoping one more coat of white and then the pale grey to match the other three walls in our room. Jim got up into the attic and retrieved boxes and made sure the ceiling fan in our room was okay (as it appeared skewed). He took down much of his computer equipment. I moved all the comic books (9 boxes) into the shed, along with three plastic boxes of clothing (so that I could move the bed to be able to paint the black wall. The room is trashed, but that will be a fairly simple fix tomorrow night (after the second coat of white and before the third coat of hopefully grey). Also, the baseboard behind the couch is now white. I'm not sure why I didn't paint that back when I did all the rest of the baseboards in the house. Jackie is coming over for dinner on Thursday so that Ma can sign the myriad of papers necessary. Of course, since they didn't buy a dishwasher today, we're going to have to find time to do that in addition to signing paperwork that day. I'm really quite irritated that they didn't buy a dishwasher today. That falls into my WTF category (you know, WhyTF would you go to the crappy HD on 50 instead of the nice one at Waterford, when they're equidistance from the house. Or WhyTF not go to another HD when one had nothing in stock. And so many other questions. But, it's my fault for not having the coupon, I guess.). And Ma will play helpless and refuse to go pay for it during the day while she's off so we can pick it up after work this week (since the 2 turns it takes - Chickasaw to Curry Ford to Alafaya - is too complicated for Ma to be able to drive to Waterford, yet she can drive WayTF out to Lake Buena Vista to go to work every day. I'll just never understand.). But at least we have a stove again. It's amazing all the foods you can't cook when you don't have a stove.
But the good news is we got the word that we're approved for $X. I wasn't expecting to hear back until tomorrow. And I'm pleased (relieved) that the amount we pre-qualified for was what we actually qualified for - I was scared we'd be approved for a lesser amount.
I'll call around tomorrow morning to see if the HD by my office has the dishwasher we want so that I can convince Ma to come meet me for lunch and drive way the hell out there to buy the dishwasher. It completely sucks that she won't cut back on her work so that we could have an easier time (1) seeing her and (2) planning stuff.
There are a couple other things that are just irritating the hell out of me, but I'll abstain so that I don't work myself into a steady seethe before trying to sleep.

(1)I'm not related by blood
(2)I'll never produce a grandchild for Margarita because my husband wants to travel before he has additional children (like as if we'll ever have the means to travel)
(3)I don't go out of my way to make Margarita cry
So I'll just never be as wonderful as almighty whore Patricia. And so I seethe whenever Patricia calls and Margarita spends time talking to her (about more than just the upbringing of Rachel) or whenever she goes and spends time at Patricia's house.
